Colombia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 with a controlled 1-0 victory over Ghana at Kansas City Stadium.

Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute, finishing from a Luis Suárez assist to give Colombia an early lead they never surrendered.

Colombia Strike Early

Colombia started brightly and found the breakthrough after just 14 minutes.

Luis Suárez created the opening, picking out Jhon Arias, who finished confidently to make it 1-0. The early goal allowed Colombia to settle into the match and control the tempo.

Ghana tried to respond through Antoine Semenyo, Iñaki Williams and Thomas Partey, but they struggled to trouble the Colombian goalkeeper.

Ghana Struggle in the Final Third

Ghana pushed forward in spells, especially late in the first half, but their finishing let them down.

Despite registering eight shots, the Black Stars failed to put a single effort on target. Colombia, by contrast, looked more composed in attack and forced Ghana to defend for long periods.

Colombia Manage the Game

After halftime, Colombia continued to dominate possession and create the better chances.

A potential second goal was ruled out after a VAR review in the 57th minute, but Néstor Lorenzo’s side remained in control. Richard Ríos, Juan Quintero and Jaminton Campaz all added energy from the bench as Colombia closed out the result.

Match Statistics

  • Possession: Colombia 62% – 38% Ghana
  • Shots: Colombia 20 – 8 Ghana
  • Shots on target: Colombia 8 – 0 Ghana
  • Passes: Colombia 576 – 349 Ghana
  • Pass accuracy: Colombia 90% – 84% Ghana
  • Corners: Colombia 3 – 2 Ghana

What It Means

Colombia advance to the Round of 16 after a mature knockout performance built on early attacking quality and defensive control.

Ghana exit the tournament after failing to convert their possession spells into genuine scoring threat.

Colombia vs Ghana: South American Flair Meets African Determination

Colombia and Ghana meet in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 with a place in the last 16 on the line. The clash at Kansas City Stadium promises an intriguing battle between Colombia’s attacking quality and Ghana’s resilience.

The pre-match numbers strongly favour Colombia, but knockout football has repeatedly shown that momentum and discipline can overturn expectations.

Colombia Looking to Continue Their Strong Run

Colombia arrive as clear favourites with a 68% win probability, reflecting the quality they have displayed throughout the tournament.

Their balanced approach, combining technical midfield play with dangerous attacking transitions, has made them one of the more complete teams in the competition.

A composed performance would see them continue their push toward a deep World Cup run.

Ghana Chasing Another Famous Upset

Ghana have been given just an 11% chance of winning in normal time, but they have built a reputation over the years for upsetting highly fancied opponents on the biggest stage.

The Black Stars will likely rely on defensive organisation, quick counterattacks and physical intensity to frustrate Colombia before looking for opportunities in transition.

If they can keep the game close, pressure could quickly shift onto the favourites.

Key Battle

Colombia’s ability to dominate possession and create chances between the lines will be tested by Ghana’s athletic midfield and compact defensive structure.

Should Ghana absorb the early pressure, this could become one of the more unpredictable Round of 32 fixtures.

Prediction

Colombia enter the match with superior form, greater attacking depth and considerably stronger pre-match projections.

However, Ghana possess enough pace and physicality to make life uncomfortable if they remain organised.

Prediction: Colombia 2-0 Ghana
