Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a goalless 120 minutes at BC Place in Vancouver.

Despite Colombia creating more chances throughout the match, Switzerland held firm before keeping their composure from the penalty spot to eliminate one of South America’s strongest sides.

A Tight Contest Produces No Goals

The Round of 16 encounter remained scoreless throughout normal time and extra time, with both teams struggling to convert promising opportunities.

Colombia enjoyed slightly fewer touches of the ball but created the better attacking moments, finishing with 15 shots compared to Switzerland’s seven.

Luis Díaz, Jhon Arias, Luis Suárez and later substitutes Juan Quintero and Jaminton Campaz all threatened, but Switzerland’s defence and goalkeeper repeatedly denied them.

At the other end, Granit Xhaka, Dan Ndoye and Fabian Rieder all came close, but neither side could find the breakthrough.

Colombia Waste Their Chances

Statistically, Colombia looked the more dangerous team.

They recorded:

  • 15 shots to Switzerland’s 7
  • 7 corners to Switzerland’s 3
  • 3 shots on target compared to Switzerland’s 2

However, Murat Yakin’s side defended resolutely throughout 120 minutes and successfully forced the match to penalties.

Switzerland Hold Their Nerve

The penalty shootout proved decisive.

Switzerland converted four of their spot kicks while Colombia managed only three, sending the Swiss into the last eight after one of the tournament’s most closely contested knockout matches.

Match Statistics

  • Possession: Switzerland 53% – 47% Colombia
  • Shots: Switzerland 7 – 15 Colombia
  • Shots on target: Switzerland 2 – 3 Colombia
  • Passes: Switzerland 567 – 504 Colombia
  • Pass accuracy: Switzerland 88% – 87% Colombia
  • Corners: Switzerland 3 – 7 Colombia

What It Means

Switzerland advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, where they will continue an impressive tournament run built on defensive organisation and composure under pressure.

For Colombia, the defeat is particularly painful after creating more chances but failing to convert them before falling in the shootout.

Switzerland vs Colombia Preview: Can Los Cafeteros Continue Their Charge at the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Switzerland and Colombia meet in Vancouver with a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals on the line as two disciplined and in-form sides collide in the Round of 16.

Colombia enter the knockout clash as slight favourites after edging Ghana in the previous round, while Switzerland arrive full of confidence following a comfortable victory over Algeria. With both teams built on defensive discipline and clinical finishing, this promises to be one of the tightest matches of the Round of 16.

Road to the Round of 16

Switzerland secured their place in the knockout stage with a composed 2-0 victory over Algeria. Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye highlighted a balanced performance built on defensive solidity and efficiency in front of goal.

Colombia, meanwhile, booked their place in the Round of 16 with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Ghana. Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal as Los Cafeteros controlled possession and created the better opportunities throughout the match.

Switzerland Building Quiet Momentum

Switzerland have once again shown why they are one of international football’s most consistent tournament teams.

Organised defensively, comfortable in possession and dangerous on the counterattack, Murat Yakin’s side rarely allow opponents many clear chances.

Breel Embolo, Dan Ndoye and Granit Xhaka continue to provide leadership and quality across the pitch.

Colombia Eye Another Deep Run

Colombia have impressed with their balance between attack and defence.

Luis Díaz remains their biggest attacking threat, while midfielders Richard Ríos and Gustavo Puerta have controlled matches effectively. Defensively, Davinson Sánchez has anchored a back line that has looked increasingly confident as the tournament has progressed.

Colombia’s ability to dominate possession without leaving themselves exposed makes them a difficult opponent in knockout football.

Key Battle

Luis Díaz vs Switzerland’s Defence

Colombia will rely heavily on Luis Díaz’s pace and creativity to unlock one of the tournament’s most disciplined defensive units.

Switzerland, meanwhile, will look to limit space between the lines and hit Colombia quickly in transition whenever opportunities arise.

Players to Watch

Switzerland

  • Breel Embolo
  • Dan Ndoye
  • Granit Xhaka
  • Manuel Akanji

Colombia

  • Luis Díaz
  • Jhon Arias
  • Richard Ríos
  • Davinson Sánchez

Match Prediction

The win probabilities underline just how evenly balanced this encounter is.

  • Colombia win: 43%
  • Switzerland win: 27%
  • Extra time: 30%

Colombia hold a slight edge thanks to their attacking quality, but Switzerland’s organisation makes them one of the toughest teams to eliminate.

Extra time would not be a surprise.

Prediction: Colombia 2-1 Switzerland (after extra time)
