Austria secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after an extraordinary 3-3 draw against Algeria in their final Group J match at Kansas City Stadium. Saša Kalajdžić struck deep into stoppage time to rescue a point moments after Riyad Mahrez looked to have won it for Algeria.

The result leaves Austria second in Group J with four points, while Algeria finish third and are eliminated despite producing one of their best performances of the tournament.

Match Summary

Austria opened the scoring in the 28th minute when David Alaba’s cross found Marko Arnautović, who finished confidently to make it 1-0.

Algeria responded just before halftime as Rafik Belghali restored parity, sending the sides into the break level at 1-1.

The second half exploded into life. Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s lead five minutes after the restart before Riyad Mahrez struck from Houssem Aouar’s pass to make it 2-2.

With the match heading for a draw, Mahrez appeared to complete Algeria’s comeback in the third minute of stoppage time, calmly finishing once again after another assist from Aouar to give Algeria a 3-2 lead.

However, Austria refused to surrender. In the sixth minute of added time, substitute Michael Gregoritsch delivered a decisive cross for fellow substitute Saša Kalajdžić, who headed home the dramatic equalizer that secured Austria’s place in the Round of 32.
