Atlético Madrid sent a powerful message to the rest of Europe with a dominant 5-1 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt at the Metropolitano. A blistering first-half performance had Atleti 3-0 up by the break, and even though Frankfurt pulled one back through Burkardt, goals from Simeone and Julián Álvarez capped off a five-star showing.
Things to Watch Out For
- Home fortress: Atlético have now won 10 of their last 11 Champions League home games, a run only matched by Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
- Frankfurt’s collapse: The 5-1 defeat is their heaviest in European competition since 1990.
- Atleti milestone: Atlético reached 200 Champions League goals, becoming only the 17th side to hit the landmark.
- Attacking depth: Five different players scored or assisted for Atleti, underlining their threat from all areas.
Commentary
The contest was effectively over by half-time as Atlético ran riot. Giacomo Raspadori struck in the 4th minute to open the scoring, before Robin Le Normand doubled the lead just after the half-hour. Antoine Griezmann added a third with a cheeky finish in stoppage time to send Atleti into the break cruising.
Frankfurt briefly found hope when Jonathan Burkardt pulled one back on 57 minutes, but the home side quickly shut the door. Giuliano Simeone restored the three-goal cushion on 70 minutes, and Julián Álvarez’s penalty made it five, sealing one of Atleti’s biggest Champions League wins.
The result leaves Atlético sitting top of their group, while Frankfurt face a steep climb after back-to-back defeats in Europe.
