Egypt booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time at Dallas Stadium.

Emam Ashour gave Egypt an early lead before an unfortunate own goal by Mohamed Hany brought Australia level. Neither side could find a winner in extra time, sending the contest to penalties where the Pharaohs produced a flawless display from the spot.

Egypt Strike First

Egypt settled quickly and looked dangerous whenever they moved forward.

Their breakthrough arrived in the 13th minute when Karim Hafez delivered an excellent cross that Emam Ashour met with a powerful header to give Egypt a deserved 1-0 lead.

The North Africans controlled much of the first half, enjoying 58% possession while moving the ball confidently through midfield.

Australia created several opportunities before the break but were unable to beat the Egyptian defence.

Australia Benefit From an Own Goal

Australia increased the pressure after halftime.

Their persistence paid off in the 55th minute when Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, bringing the Socceroos level at 1-1.

The equaliser sparked an entertaining second half, with both teams creating chances to win the match.

Egypt came closest through Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, while Australia threatened through Nestory Irankunda, Connor Metcalfe and Ajdin Hrustić.

Neither goalkeeper was beaten again in regulation time.

Extra Time Produces Drama But No Winner

The additional 30 minutes saw opportunities at both ends.

Egypt continued to threaten from set pieces and corners, while Australia pushed forward whenever space opened up.

Mohamed Salah forced a late save, Emam Ashour missed narrowly, and Australia created dangerous moments through Mohamed Touré and Awer Mabil.

Despite the attacking intent from both sides, the deadlock remained unbroken.

Egypt Deliver Under Pressure

The match was ultimately decided from the penalty spot.

Egypt converted all four of their penalties through Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah and Hossam Abdelmaguid.

Australia, however, missed twice. Harry Souttar failed with the opening kick before Lucas Herrington also missed, allowing Egypt to secure a 4-2 shootout victory.

It was a composed and clinical finish from the Pharaohs after more than two hours of hard-fought football.

Match Statistics

  • Possession: Australia 42% – 58% Egypt
  • Shots: Australia 15 – 14 Egypt
  • Shots on target: Australia 3 – 4 Egypt
  • Passes: Australia 518 – 696 Egypt
  • Pass accuracy: Australia 83% – 89% Egypt
  • Corners: Australia 4 – 7 Egypt

While Australia registered one more shot overall, Egypt controlled possession, completed significantly more passes and created the better chances throughout the match.

What It Means

Egypt advance to the Round of 16 after showing composure both during the match and in the decisive penalty shootout.

Their disciplined performance and perfect execution from the penalty spot underline their credentials as a dangerous knockout opponent.

Australia bow out after a spirited display, but missed penalties ultimately proved costly.

Player of the Match

Emam Ashour (Egypt)

Ashour opened the scoring with a well-taken header, remained one of Egypt’s biggest attacking threats throughout the contest and helped drive the Pharaohs into the next round.

Australia vs Egypt Preview: Pharaohs Hold Slight Edge in Dallas Knockout Clash

Australia and Egypt face off in Dallas on Wednesday in one of the most intriguing FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 encounters, with both nations eyeing a historic place in the last 16.

Neither side enters as an overwhelming favourite, although Egypt have a slight statistical edge. Australia’s resilience throughout the tournament, however, means this promises to be a tightly contested knockout battle.

Pre-match projections give Egypt a 38% probability of winning in normal time, while Australia have a 29% chance, with a notable 33% probability that the match will go to extra time.

Australia Hoping to Continue Their Knockout Run

Australia have once again built their campaign on discipline, work rate and defensive organization.

The Socceroos are comfortable allowing opponents more possession before looking to strike quickly in transition. Their physicality and commitment have made them difficult opponents throughout the tournament, and they will be confident of matching Egypt over 90 minutes.

A strong defensive display could frustrate the Pharaohs and turn the contest into another battle of patience.

Egypt Chasing Another Milestone

Egypt have grown into the tournament with composed performances built around defensive solidity and clinical finishing.

The Pharaohs have shown they can absorb pressure before punishing opponents with quick attacks, and their balanced approach has earned them slight favouritism entering the knockout stage.

If Egypt can control possession in midfield and convert their chances, they have every opportunity to progress.

Key Battle

The midfield battle is expected to shape the contest.

Australia will attempt to disrupt Egypt’s rhythm through aggressive pressing and quick transitions, while Egypt will look to dictate possession and create openings through patient build-up play.

Whichever side controls the tempo is likely to earn the decisive advantage.

Prediction

This looks set to be one of the closest matches of the Round of 32.

Australia rarely make life easy for opponents, but Egypt appear to possess slightly more quality in the final third and may have enough to edge a hard-fought encounter.

Prediction: Australia 1-2 Egypt
