Ivory Coast claimed a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador thanks to a stoppage-time strike from substitute Amad Diallo in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group E match at Philadelphia Stadium.

After a tightly contested encounter that looked destined to end goalless, Diallo came off the bench to score the decisive goal in the 90th minute, handing the Elephants all three points and moving them level with Germany at the top of Group E.

Cagey First Half Produces Few Chances

The opening 45 minutes saw Ecuador enjoy slightly more possession, but neither side managed to create many clear-cut opportunities.

Ivory Coast pressed aggressively but struggled to convert their attacks into goals, while Ecuador’s disciplined defence held firm to ensure the teams entered halftime locked at 0-0.

The first half was also marked by several bookings for the African side, with Seko Fofana, Franck Kessié and Guéla Doué all receiving yellow cards.

Second Half Opens Up

Ivory Coast became more adventurous after the break, introducing Amad Diallo and Ange-Yoan Bonny just before the hour mark in search of a breakthrough.

The substitutions immediately increased the tempo as the Elephants pushed Ecuador deeper into their own half.

Seko Fofana forced a save from the Ecuador goalkeeper in the 61st minute, while Nicolas Pépé and Yan Diomande continued to threaten from wide areas.

Ecuador remained dangerous on the counterattack but managed only one shot on target throughout the match.

Diallo Delivers at the Death

Just as the match appeared destined for a draw, Ivory Coast found the breakthrough in the 90th minute.

Substitute Amad Diallo produced the decisive finish to send the African champions into celebration and secure a crucial opening victory in Group E.

The late goal rewarded Ivory Coast’s persistence after they finished with 16 shots compared to Ecuador’s 10.

Match Statistics

  • Shots: Ivory Coast 16, Ecuador 10
  • Shots on Target: Ivory Coast 4, Ecuador 1

Group E Standings

  1. Germany – 3 points (+6 GD)
  2. Ivory Coast – 3 points (+1 GD)
  3. Ecuador – 0 points (-1 GD)

Ivory Coast’s dramatic victory gives them an excellent start to their World Cup campaign, while Ecuador will need a positive result in their next match to revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
