England are through to the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after surviving a dramatic 3-2 win over Mexico at Mexico City Stadium.

Jude Bellingham scored twice in two minutes before Harry Kane added a penalty, but England were forced to hold on after Jarell Quansah’s red card and a fierce Mexico fightback.

Bellingham Takes Control

Mexico started with energy, but England struck first in the 36th minute when Bellingham headed in from Bukayo Saka’s assist.

Two minutes later, Bellingham scored again, this time from a Harry Kane assist, to put England 2-0 ahead.

Mexico responded before halftime through Julián Quiñones, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and bringing the home crowd back into the match.

England Go Down to Ten Men

The second half turned chaotic.

Jarell Quansah was sent off in the 54th minute after a VAR review, leaving England to defend their lead with ten men.

But England soon won a penalty, and Kane converted in the 60th minute to make it 3-1.

Mexico Push Until the End

Mexico refused to go away.

Raúl Jiménez converted from the penalty spot in the 69th minute after VAR awarded Mexico a penalty, making it 3-2.

From there, Mexico dominated possession and pressure, piling on corners and late chances. They finished with 23 shots and 12 corners, but England survived the storm.

Mexico vs England Preview: Can El Tri Use Home Advantage to Reach the FIFA World Cup 2026 Quarter-Finals?

England face one of their toughest tests of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far as they travel to the iconic Mexico City Stadium to take on hosts Mexico in a high-stakes Round of 16 clash.

England enter the knockout match as slight favourites, but with Mexico playing in front of a passionate home crowd, this promises to be one of the most evenly balanced fixtures of the Round of 16.

Road to the Round of 16

Mexico have grown into the tournament with disciplined defensive displays and strong performances in front of their home supporters. Their ability to remain organised while creating chances on the counter has made them one of the tournament’s toughest sides to break down.

England arrive with one of the competition’s deepest squads. The Three Lions have shown flashes of their attacking quality throughout the group stage and now begin the knockout rounds knowing expectations are growing with every match.

Mexico Looking to Make Home Advantage Count

Playing in Mexico City gives El Tri an enormous boost.

The atmosphere is expected to be one of the loudest of the tournament, with thousands of home fans hoping to inspire their side to another memorable World Cup night.

Mexico’s defensive structure, quick transitions and ability to frustrate possession-based teams could prove vital against England.

England Chasing Another Deep World Cup Run

England possess quality throughout the pitch.

With world-class talent in attack and a midfield capable of controlling possession, Gareth Southgate’s side will look to dictate the tempo from the opening whistle.

England know patience may be required against a compact Mexican defence, but they have match-winners capable of deciding tight knockout games.

Key Battle

Mexico’s Defence vs England’s Attack

England are expected to enjoy more possession, while Mexico will look to remain compact before breaking quickly through transition.

If Mexico can keep England frustrated deep into the second half, momentum and the home crowd could become major factors.

Match Prediction

The pre-match probabilities suggest a very competitive contest.

  • England win: 40%
  • Mexico win: 30%
  • Extra time: 30%

Those numbers highlight just how evenly matched this Round of 16 tie appears.

England have slightly greater squad depth and experience in major tournaments, but Mexico’s home advantage could narrow the gap considerably.

Don’t be surprised if this one goes beyond 90 minutes.
