Morocco produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far, defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw through extra time to book their place in the Round of 16.
The match looked destined to end in Dutch celebrations after Cody Gakpo finally broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute. Crysencio Summerville slipped a perfectly weighted pass into the area and Gakpo calmly finished low into the corner to put Ronald Koeman’s side within touching distance of qualification.
But Morocco refused to accept defeat.
Deep into stoppage time, Chemsdine Talbi delivered an inviting cross that Issa Diop powered home with a towering header in the 91st minute, stunning the Dutch and sending the Monterrey crowd into celebration as the match headed into extra time.
Neither side could find the decisive goal across the additional 30 minutes despite Morocco continuing to control possession and create the better opportunities.
The penalty shootout proved equally dramatic.
Teun Koopmeiners gave the Netherlands an early advantage before Neil El Aynaoui missed for Morocco. However, Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville all failed from the spot for the Dutch, opening the door for Morocco.
Goals from Soufiane Rahimi, Chemsdine Talbi and finally Ismael Saibari secured a 3-2 shootout victory, completing an unforgettable turnaround.
Morocco’s dominance throughout the contest was reflected in the statistics. They controlled 70% possession, completed 780 passes at 92% accuracy, registered 12 shots to the Netherlands’ seven, and forced eight corners as they consistently pushed the Dutch defence backwards.
The Atlas Lions now advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after another resilient knockout performance, while the Netherlands bow out despite leading with only minutes remaining.
