Saudi Arabia produced one of the surprises of the opening round at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, holding Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in an entertaining Group H clash at Miami Stadium.
Despite spending much of the match defending against relentless Uruguayan pressure, the Green Falcons looked set for a famous victory before Maximiliano Araújo struck ten minutes from time to rescue a point for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Saudi Arabia Shock the South Americans
Uruguay dominated possession from the opening whistle, controlling 65% of the ball and creating several early opportunities.
However, Saudi Arabia remained disciplined defensively and struck against the run of play in the 41st minute.
Following sustained pressure from a set-piece, defender Abdulelah Al-Amri reacted quickest inside the box to fire home and send Saudi Arabia into halftime with a stunning 1-0 lead.
The goal capped an impressive defensive first half in which Saudi Arabia frustrated one of South America’s strongest sides.
Uruguay Turn Up the Pressure
After the break, Uruguay introduced fresh attacking options, replacing Darwin Núñez and Matías Viña as they searched for an equaliser.
Wave after wave of attacks followed, with the Saudis forced deeper into their own half.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 80th minute when Maximiliano Araújo converted after sustained pressure to level the score at 1-1.
Uruguay continued to push for a winner during stoppage time, creating several dangerous moments, but Saudi Arabia’s defence stood firm to secure a valuable point.
