Cabo Verde produced one of the most memorable results of their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, fighting back twice to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Uruguay in Miami.

The African side stunned Uruguay early through Kevin Pina before the South Americans responded with two quick goals before halftime. However, substitute Hélio Varela struck in the second half to rescue a valuable point and keep Cabo Verde firmly in the race for a place in the knockout stage.

The result leaves Group H finely balanced heading into the final round of matches.

Cabo Verde Strike First

Uruguay entered the match as favorites but found themselves behind after just 21 minutes.

Kevin Pina gave Cabo Verde a deserved lead after a bright opening spell from Bubista’s side, silencing the Uruguayan supporters inside Miami Stadium.

The Blue Sharks defended confidently and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward, frustrating Marcelo Bielsa’s men for much of the first half.

Uruguay Turn the Match Around

Uruguay eventually found their response late in the opening period.

Maximiliano Araújo brought La Celeste level in the 44th minute, finishing off a sustained spell of pressure.

Just as Cabo Verde looked set to reach halftime level, Agustín Canobbio struck deep into stoppage time. Araújo turned provider this time, setting up Canobbio to complete a rapid turnaround and hand Uruguay a 2-1 advantage.

The momentum appeared firmly with the South Americans heading into the break.

Varela Changes the Game

Cabo Verde refused to fold.

Coach Bubista introduced Hélio Varela shortly before the hour mark, and the substitute made an immediate impact.

Just two minutes after entering the pitch, Varela found the net to level the score at 2-2 and breathe new life into Cabo Verde’s World Cup hopes.

The goal shifted the pressure back onto Uruguay, who pushed hard for a winner during the closing stages.

Uruguay Frustrated Despite Dominance

Uruguay controlled possession and territory for much of the match.

They enjoyed 66% possession, won 11 corners and attempted 16 shots.

A potential winning goal was even ruled out following a VAR review, adding to Uruguay’s frustration.

Darwin Núñez and Nicolás de la Cruz were introduced in the second half as Bielsa searched for a breakthrough, but Cabo Verde’s defense held firm.

Match Statistics

Despite the draw, Uruguay dominated several key metrics.

  • Possession: Uruguay 66% – 34% Cabo Verde
  • Shots: Uruguay 16 – 11 Cabo Verde
  • Passes: Uruguay 466 – 277 Cabo Verde
  • Pass Accuracy: Uruguay 87% – 74% Cabo Verde
  • Corners: Uruguay 11 – 4 Cabo Verde

However, Cabo Verde were more clinical with their chances and deserved their share of the points.

Everything remains to play for heading into the final round of group-stage fixtures.

Player of the Match

Maximiliano Araújo (Uruguay)

Araújo was Uruguay’s most influential player, scoring the equalizer before assisting Agustín Canobbio’s goal. His energy and attacking intent kept Uruguay in control for large periods of the contest.

What It Means

Uruguay remain unbeaten but have now drawn both of their Group H matches and face a tense final fixture.

For Cabo Verde, this result represents another impressive World Cup performance. Holding Uruguay demonstrates that the Blue Sharks are capable of competing with established football nations and keeps their knockout-stage dream alive.

With Spain leading the group on four points and Uruguay and Cabo Verde both sitting on two, Group H is set for a dramatic finish.
