Spain delivered one of the most convincing performances of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage so far, sweeping aside Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta to move top of Group H and take a major step toward the knockout rounds.

Goals from Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal, along with a second-half own goal from Hassan Altambakti, sealed a comfortable victory for Luis de la Fuente’s side, who controlled the contest from start to finish.

The result moves Spain onto four points after two matches, level with Uruguay but ahead on goal difference, while Saudi Arabia drop to the bottom of the group with just one point and a goal difference of minus four.

Spain Take Control Early

Spain needed only ten minutes to break the deadlock.

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal opened the scoring after being picked out by Mikel Oyarzabal, giving La Roja an early advantage and setting the tone for the evening.

Saudi Arabia struggled to cope with Spain’s movement and relentless possession, spending long periods pinned inside their own half.

Spain doubled their lead in the 21st minute when Oyarzabal found the net, before adding his second just three minutes later to put the match beyond doubt before halftime.

At the break, Spain held a commanding 3-0 lead and had already registered complete control of the game.

Total Spanish Dominance

The statistics reflected Spain’s superiority.

La Roja finished with:

  • 21 shots to Saudi Arabia’s 3
  • 9 shots on target to 1
  • 65% possession
  • 639 completed passes
  • 92% pass accuracy

Saudi Arabia rarely threatened and struggled to build meaningful attacks against Spain’s aggressive pressing and midfield control.

The European side continuously recycled possession and created chances through quick passing combinations and intelligent movement in the final third.

Own Goal Adds to Saudi Arabia’s Misery

Any hopes of a Saudi Arabian response disappeared shortly after halftime.

In the 49th minute, defender Hassan Altambakti inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to deal with another dangerous Spanish attack.

The own goal extended Spain’s lead to 4-0 and effectively ended the contest.

Luis de la Fuente then rotated his squad, introducing Ferran Torres, Yeremy Pino, Nico Williams, Mikel Merino and Fabián Ruiz while maintaining complete control.

Group H Race Tightens

The victory leaves Spain in an excellent position heading into the final round of group-stage matches.

Spain have yet to concede a goal in the tournament and now possess the strongest goal difference in the group.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, will need a major result in their final match and favorable results elsewhere to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive.

Player of the Match

Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain)

The Spanish forward was at the heart of everything dangerous. He provided the assist for Yamal’s opener before scoring twice himself, helping Spain race into an unassailable first-half lead.

What It Means

Spain’s blend of youth, technical quality and tactical control is beginning to make them look like genuine contenders in this tournament.

With Lamine Yamal continuing to shine and the midfield dictating matches with ease, La Roja appear to be peaking at the right moment.

For Saudi Arabia, the defeat exposes the gap between themselves and the tournament’s elite. Their final group match now becomes a must-win encounter if they are to have any chance of progressing.

Spain seek their first FIFA World Cup 2026 victory as Saudi Arabia aim to spring another surprise in Group H.

Spain take on Saudi Arabia in a key FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H fixture on Sunday, 21 June at 19:00 EAT at Atlanta Stadium, with both teams looking to strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout stage.

After opening the tournament with draws, both nations sit on one point heading into Matchday 2. However, Spain enter the contest as overwhelming favorites and will be expected to claim all three points against a Saudi Arabian side eager to produce another memorable World Cup result.

Spain searching for breakthrough victory

Spain began their World Cup campaign with a goalless draw, earning a point but failing to convert their dominance into goals.

The 2010 world champions currently occupy third place in Group H with one point and know that victory would put them in a commanding position ahead of the final round of group matches.

With their trademark possession-based football and creative midfield, Spain will aim to control proceedings from the opening whistle.

Saudi Arabia looking to upset the odds

Saudi Arabia also started the tournament with a draw, collecting one point to sit second in the standings.

The Green Falcons have shown they can frustrate higher-ranked opponents on the international stage and will hope to produce another disciplined performance against one of Europe’s strongest sides.

A positive result would significantly boost their hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds.

Group H standings

After Matchday 1:

  1. Uruguay – 1 point
  2. Saudi Arabia – 1 point
  3. Spain – 1 point
  4. Cabo Verde – 1 point

With every team level on points, the second round of fixtures could dramatically reshape the group standings.

Match outlook

The pre-match projections heavily favor Spain.

Win probability:

  • Spain: 89%
  • Draw: 8%
  • Saudi Arabia: 3%

Spain are expected to dominate possession and create the majority of scoring opportunities, while Saudi Arabia will likely rely on defensive organization and quick counterattacks to threaten their opponents.

With qualification to the knockout stage at stake, both teams know the importance of securing a positive result in Atlanta.
