Japan produced one of their most complete performances of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far, brushing aside Tunisia 4-0 in Monterrey to move level on points with Group F leaders Netherlands.

The Samurai Blue dominated from start to finish, scoring early through Daichi Kamada before Ayase Ueda struck twice and Junya Ito added another in a commanding display that leaves Tunisia on the brink of elimination.

With four points from two matches, Japan remain firmly in the race for a place in the Round of 16, while Tunisia sit bottom of Group F after consecutive defeats.

Kamada Gives Japan the Perfect Start

Japan wasted little time asserting control.

Just four minutes into the match, Daichi Kamada opened the scoring after being picked out by Keito Nakamura. The early goal immediately put Tunisia on the back foot and allowed Japan to dictate the tempo.

Tunisia struggled to establish possession as Japan’s midfield pressed aggressively and moved the ball with precision.

The pressure paid off again in the 31st minute when Ayase Ueda doubled the lead. Defender Kou Itakura turned provider, finding the striker who calmly finished to make it 2-0.

Japan headed into halftime firmly in command.

Tunisia Unable to Respond

Tunisia attempted to change the momentum after the break with two halftime substitutions, but Japan remained in complete control.

The North Africans created very little going forward and managed just three shots throughout the entire match, with only one testing the Japanese goalkeeper.

Japan’s defensive organization ensured Tunisia never looked capable of mounting a comeback.

Ueda and Ito Finish the Job

The third goal arrived in the 69th minute.

Ayase Ueda turned provider this time, setting up Junya Ito, who fired home from close range to effectively end the contest.

Japan continued to push forward and were rewarded again seven minutes from time when Ueda grabbed his second goal of the evening.

Kaishu Sano provided the assist as Ueda completed an impressive individual performance and sealed a convincing 4-0 victory.

Japan Dominate the Statistics

The match statistics highlighted Japan’s superiority.

  • Possession: Japan 57% – 43% Tunisia
  • Shots: Japan 10 – 3 Tunisia
  • Shots on target: Japan 5 – 1 Tunisia
  • Passes: Japan 549 – 312 Tunisia
  • Pass accuracy: Japan 91% – 83% Tunisia

Japan controlled the ball, created more chances and rarely looked troubled defensively.

Group F Standings

After two matches, the group remains finely balanced.

Japan’s impressive goal difference now gives them a strong platform heading into the final round of group-stage fixtures.

Tunisia, meanwhile, face a difficult task to avoid an early exit.

Player of the Match

Ayase Ueda (Japan)

The Japanese striker delivered a complete center-forward performance, scoring twice and providing an assist for Junya Ito’s goal. His movement consistently troubled Tunisia’s defense and he was at the heart of Japan’s attacking success.

What It Means

Japan continue to underline why many consider them one of the most dangerous dark horses at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Their technical quality, organization and clinical finishing were on full display against Tunisia.

With Netherlands and Japan now tied on four points, the battle for top spot in Group F is set up perfectly heading into the final group-stage matches.

For Tunisia, however, two defeats from two matches leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

Japan target their first FIFA World Cup 2026 victory as Tunisia fight to keep their knockout hopes alive.

Tunisia and Japan face off in a crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F encounter on Sunday, 21 June at 07:00 EAT at Estadio Monterrey in Guadalupe, with both teams chasing vital points for very different reasons.

Japan enter the match looking for their first victory after opening the tournament with a draw, while Tunisia are aiming to recover from a heavy defeat that left them bottom of the group. With the knockout stage drawing closer, every point could prove decisive.

Japan looking to strengthen qualification hopes

Japan began their World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands, earning a point in an entertaining contest that showcased their attacking quality.

The Asian giants currently sit second in Group F with one point and know that victory over Tunisia would move them closer to securing a place in the knockout rounds.

Japan’s pace, technical ability and organized pressing will make them favorites heading into the clash.

Tunisia seeking a response

Tunisia suffered a difficult start to the tournament, falling 5-1 to Sweden and slipping to the bottom of the standings with a goal difference of -4.

The North Africans now face a must-win situation if they are to keep realistic hopes of advancing alive.

They will need a much stronger defensive performance while taking advantage of any opportunities that come their way against Japan.

Group F standings

After Matchday 1:

  1. Sweden – 3 points (+4)
  2. Japan – 1 point (0)
  3. Netherlands – 1 point (0)
  4. Tunisia – 0 points (-4)

A win for Japan would put them in a strong position ahead of the final group match, while Tunisia need all three points to avoid early elimination.

Match outlook

The pre-match projections clearly favor Japan.

Win probability:

  • Japan: 63%
  • Draw: 23%
  • Tunisia: 14%

Japan are expected to dominate possession and create the better chances, while Tunisia will likely adopt a disciplined defensive approach and look to strike on the counterattack.

With qualification implications for both nations, the Group F encounter promises to be a high-stakes battle in Guadalupe.
