Germany announced themselves as serious contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a devastating 7-1 victory over tournament debutants Curaçao in their opening Group E clash in Houston.
Despite a brief scare after Curaçao equalized in the first half, Julian Nagelsmann’s side responded emphatically, scoring six unanswered goals to move top of Group E on goal difference.
Fast Start from Germany
Germany needed just six minutes to break the deadlock as Felix Nmecha finished confidently after being picked out by Florian Wirtz.
The early lead suggested a comfortable afternoon, but Curaçao refused to be overwhelmed and stunned the four-time world champions in the 21st minute when Livano Comenencia fired home the nation’s historic first-ever FIFA World Cup goal.
The score remained level only briefly before Germany regained control. Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead with a powerful header in the 38th minute from Nathaniel Brown’s delivery.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Kai Havertz converted from the penalty spot to send Germany into the break with a 3-1 advantage.
Germany Take Complete Control
Any hopes of a Curaçao comeback disappeared moments after halftime.
Joshua Kimmich delivered a perfect pass for Jamal Musiala to make it 4-1 just two minutes into the second half as Germany’s relentless attacking football overwhelmed the Caribbean side.
Nathaniel Brown added a fifth after combining brilliantly with substitute Deniz Undav, before Undav himself joined the scoresheet in the 78th minute after being set up by Kimmich.
Kai Havertz completed the scoring in the 88th minute with his second goal of the evening after another excellent assist from Undav, sealing an emphatic 7-1 victory.
