Belgium and Iran played out a tense 0-0 draw in Los Angeles as Group G remained wide open heading into the final round of FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage matches.

Despite dominating possession and creating the majority of the chances, Belgium were unable to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Iranian side that defended resolutely and earned a valuable point in their bid for knockout-stage qualification.

The result leaves Iran top of Group G on two points from two matches, with Belgium level on points behind them. With New Zealand and Egypt also still in contention, qualification remains firmly in the balance.

Belgium controlled much of the contest from the opening whistle. Rudi Garcia’s side enjoyed 68 percent possession, completed 575 passes, and finished with 22 shots compared to Iran’s seven. However, the Red Devils struggled to convert their dominance into goals.

Kevin De Bruyne orchestrated much of Belgium’s attacking play and created several promising opportunities, while Youri Tielemans tested Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand with a low effort in the first half. Nevertheless, Belgium lacked the finishing touch required to break the deadlock.

Iran threatened on the counterattack and thought they had found a breakthrough midway through the first half, only for a goal to be ruled out following a VAR review. The decision ensured the teams remained level heading into halftime.

The match took a dramatic turn in the 67th minute when Belgium defender Nathan Ngoy received a straight red card, reducing the Red Devils to ten men for the remainder of the contest.

With the numerical advantage, Iran pushed forward in search of a winner. Mehdi Taremi came closest when his effort was well saved, while several dangerous set-piece situations kept Belgium under pressure.

Even with ten men, Belgium continued to create opportunities. Late substitutions introduced fresh attacking options, but Iran’s defensive organization held firm as the clock ticked down.

The statistics highlighted Belgium’s control of the ball, but Iran’s resilience ultimately proved decisive. Belgium managed seven shots on target but were repeatedly denied, while Iran successfully absorbed pressure and protected their clean sheet.

As Group G heads into its final round of matches, neither side has secured qualification. Iran remain in pole position, but Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt all still have realistic hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

The draw may ultimately prove more valuable for Iran, while Belgium will be left wondering how they failed to turn their dominance into three points.

Belgium and Iran battle for a crucial first FIFA World Cup 2026 victory in a wide-open Group G.

Belgium and Iran meet in an important FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G clash on Sunday, 21 June at 22:00 EAT at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, with both sides aiming to take a major step toward the knockout stage.

After opening the tournament with draws, Belgium and Iran each sit on one point in a tightly contested group where all four teams remain level after Matchday 1. With qualification still wide open, victory in this encounter could prove decisive.

Belgium targeting first win of the tournament

Belgium began their World Cup campaign with a draw that left the Red Devils searching for more despite showing flashes of their attacking quality.

Currently third in Group G, the Europeans know three points would put them in a strong position heading into the final group match and could move them to the top of the standings depending on other results.

With a squad packed with experience and technical ability, Belgium will be expected to dictate the tempo and create the majority of scoring chances.

Iran hoping to continue impressive form

Iran also started the competition with a draw, earning a valuable point to sit second in the group.

Known for their disciplined defensive structure and quick transitions, Team Melli will be confident they can frustrate Belgium and capitalize on opportunities on the counterattack.

Another positive result would significantly strengthen their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

Group G standings

After Matchday 1:

  1. New Zealand – 1 point
  2. Iran – 1 point
  3. Belgium – 1 point
  4. Egypt – 1 point

With every team level on points, Matchday 2 could dramatically reshape the race for qualification.

Match outlook

Pre-match projections favor Belgium to collect all three points.

Win probability:

  • Belgium: 67%
  • Draw: 20%
  • Iran: 13%

Belgium are expected to enjoy more possession and attacking opportunities, while Iran will likely rely on defensive organization and rapid counterattacks to challenge one of Europe’s strongest sides.

With the knockout stage within reach, both teams have everything to play for in Inglewood.
