Brazil left it until the final moments to book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, defeating Japan 2-1 thanks to Gabriel Martinelli’s dramatic stoppage-time winner in Houston.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side dominated possession and territory for most of the evening, but Japan looked set to produce one of the tournament’s biggest upsets before Brazil found two second-half goals to turn the tie around.
Brazil controlled the match from kickoff, enjoying 60% possession, completing 679 passes at an outstanding 92% accuracy and registering 20 shots compared to Japan’s five. Yet despite their control, Japan’s disciplined defensive structure frustrated the South American giants throughout the opening half.
Against the run of play, Japan struck first in the 29th minute.
Kaishū Sano collected possession outside the penalty area and unleashed a superb right-footed strike into the bottom corner, giving Japan a surprise 1-0 lead and silencing the Houston crowd.
Brazil pushed relentlessly for an equalizer before halftime but found themselves trailing at the break despite dominating the statistics.
Recognizing the need for greater attacking urgency, Ancelotti introduced Endrick immediately after halftime before later bringing on Gabriel Martinelli as Brazil searched for a breakthrough.
The equalizer finally arrived in the 56th minute.
Gabriel Magalhães rose highest to meet a delivery into the box and nodded the ball across goal, where Casemiro powered home a header to restore parity and breathe life back into Brazil’s campaign.
With momentum firmly behind them, Brazil continued to press, forcing Japan deeper into their own half while creating a series of chances that narrowly failed to produce a winner.
Japan defended courageously and looked increasingly likely to force extra time.
Instead, heartbreak arrived in stoppage time.
In the sixth minute of added time, Bruno Guimarães slipped a perfectly weighted pass into Gabriel Martinelli inside the penalty area. The Arsenal winger calmly side-footed his finish from close range to complete Brazil’s comeback and spark wild celebrations among the Brazilian players.
The dramatic winner rewarded Brazil’s persistence after spending almost the entire match on the front foot.
Japan can leave the tournament with plenty of pride after executing their game plan brilliantly for long stretches and coming within moments of eliminating one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
For Brazil, however, the victory keeps alive their pursuit of a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title. Ancelotti’s side advances to the Round of 16 after surviving one of the toughest tests of the knockout stage.
