Canada left it until stoppage time to book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, with Stephen Eustáquio scoring a dramatic late winner to seal a 1-0 victory over South Africa at Los Angeles Stadium.
For more than 90 minutes, South Africa looked capable of forcing extra time through a disciplined defensive display and composed possession. However, Canada’s persistence finally paid off in the closing moments as Jesse Marsch’s side found the breakthrough that kept their World Cup dream alive.
The opening half was a tightly contested affair.
South Africa enjoyed more of the ball, finishing with 58% possession and completing 538 passes at an impressive 86% accuracy. Canada, however, created the more dangerous opportunities, forcing several saves while testing the South African back line with quick transitions and dangerous set pieces.
Neither side managed to find the finishing touch before halftime despite Canada’s growing pressure inside the penalty area.
The second half followed a similar pattern.
Canada gradually increased the intensity, introducing fresh attacking options including Jacob Shaffelburg, Promise David and Alphonso Davies as they searched for the decisive moment.
South Africa responded with changes of their own, bringing on Thalente Mbatha, Iqraam Rayners and Tshepang Moremi in an effort to inject fresh energy while continuing to frustrate the Canadian attack.
As extra time appeared inevitable, Canada finally found the breakthrough.
In the second minute of stoppage time, Stephen Eustáquio arrived at the perfect moment inside the penalty area to score the only goal of the match, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters.
South Africa pushed forward during the remaining minutes but could not create a clear opportunity to force extra time before the final whistle confirmed Canada’s progression.
Although South Africa controlled possession for long periods, Canada were the more threatening side throughout the contest, finishing with 14 shots, seven on target and four corners compared to South Africa’s six attempts.
The narrow victory sends Canada into the Round of 16, where confidence will be high after surviving one of the most disciplined defensive performances of the knockout stage.
For South Africa, the tournament ends in heartbreaking fashion after coming within moments of taking the match into extra time.
