Argentina secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage with a professional 2-0 victory over Austria in Group J, powered by a second-half brace from Lionel Messi in Arlington.

For long periods Austria matched the South American giants, but when the game needed a moment of quality, Messi delivered. The Argentina captain scored in the 38th minute before adding a late insurance goal deep into stoppage time to seal all three points.

Tight Contest Before Messi Breaks Through

Austria entered the match knowing a positive result would strengthen their own qualification hopes and they frustrated Argentina for much of the first half.

Ralf Rangnick’s side remained organized defensively and limited clear opportunities despite Argentina controlling possession.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 38th minute.

Facundo Medina surged forward and picked out Lionel Messi, who finished calmly to give Argentina a 1-0 lead.

The goal rewarded Argentina’s patience and sent the Albiceleste into halftime with a narrow advantage.

Austria Push for an Equalizer

Austria refused to sit back after the break.

David Alaba, Konrad Laimer and Romano Schmid helped Austria remain competitive, while later introductions including Marko Arnautović and Patrick Wimmer added attacking urgency.

However, Argentina’s experienced backline stood firm.

Emiliano Martínez was rarely troubled as Austria managed just one shot on target throughout the match despite enjoying 46 percent possession.

Lionel Scaloni also turned to his bench, introducing Julián Álvarez, Nicolás González, Leandro Paredes and Nicolás Tagliafico to help manage the game.

Messi Finishes the Job

As Austria committed more players forward in search of an equalizer, spaces began to appear.

Argentina controlled possession expertly during the closing stages and finally put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time.

Messi struck again in the 90+5th minute, completing his brace and sealing a 2-0 victory that confirmed Argentina’s dominance in Group J.

The late goal capped another masterclass from the World Cup-winning captain.

Match Statistics

Argentina were efficient rather than spectacular, controlling the game when it mattered most.

  • Shots: Argentina 12-6 Austria
  • Shots on Target: Argentina 3-1 Austria
  • Possession: Argentina 54%-46% Austria
  • Passes: Argentina 539-440 Austria
  • Pass Accuracy: Argentina 90%-87% Austria
  • Corners: Argentina 1-3 Austria

Austria remained competitive throughout, but Argentina’s superior quality in key moments proved decisive.

Group J Standings

After two matches:

  1. Argentina – 6 points
  2. Austria – 3 points
  3. Algeria – 3 points
  4. Jordan – 0 points

Argentina have already secured qualification for the knockout stage and sit comfortably at the top of the group.

Austria remain well positioned but will likely need a result in their final group match to guarantee progression.

Player of the Match: Lionel Messi

When Argentina needed inspiration, Messi provided it.

The captain scored both goals, delivered the decisive moments and once again demonstrated why he remains one of the most influential players in world football.

His brace ensured Argentina maintained their perfect start to the tournament and booked their place in the next round.
