Haaland Delivers When Norway Need Him Most

Norway booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire at Dallas Stadium.

Antonio Nusa gave the Norwegians a first-half lead before Amad Diallo inspired hopes of an Ivorian comeback after the break. But with extra time looming, Erling Haaland once again proved the difference, scoring the winning goal late in the match to keep Norway’s World Cup dream alive.

Nusa Opens the Scoring

The opening exchanges were evenly contested, with Côte d’Ivoire enjoying slightly more possession and applying pressure through a series of corners.

However, Norway struck first in the 39th minute when Antonio Nusa found the breakthrough, rewarding a disciplined first-half performance that frustrated the African side.

The goal gave Norway a valuable advantage heading into halftime despite Côte d’Ivoire controlling much of the territorial battle.

Diallo Sparks Hope Before Haaland Responds

Côte d’Ivoire emerged with greater urgency after the interval and finally found their reward in the 74th minute.

Amad Diallo calmly finished to level the contest, igniting hopes of a comeback and setting up a tense final quarter of the match.

The equalizer shifted momentum, but Norway remained composed.

With four minutes remaining, Erling Haaland delivered the decisive moment, finishing clinically in the 86th minute to restore Norway’s lead and ultimately seal qualification.

Match Statistics

Côte d’Ivoire finished with 52% possession, 14 shots and an impressive 14 corners but struggled to make their dominance count, registering only five efforts on target. Norway produced a more efficient display, recording nine shots with three on target while completing 481 passes at 89% accuracy. Their clinical finishing proved decisive in a tightly contested knockout encounter.

What the Result Means

Norway advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after surviving one of the toughest tests of the Round of 32. The combination of Antonio Nusa’s creativity and Erling Haaland’s ruthless finishing once again proved enough to separate the Scandinavian side from their opponents.

For Côte d’Ivoire, the defeat marks the end of an encouraging tournament. Despite controlling long spells and creating numerous attacking situations, they were unable to capitalize on their chances and leave the competition with their heads held high after pushing Norway until the closing minutes.
