Morocco produced a dominant second-half display to defeat Canada 3-0 in Houston, booking their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals with an impressive performance built on discipline, efficiency and clinical finishing.

After a competitive first half ended goalless, Morocco took complete control after the restart. Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half before doubling the advantage late in the game. Substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a third in stoppage time to seal a convincing victory.

First Half: Canada Hold Firm

Canada entered the knockout tie hoping to continue their historic World Cup run and created several promising moments before halftime. Jonathan David, Tajon Buchanan and Alistair Johnston all threatened Morocco’s defence, while the hosts earned a number of corners.

Morocco, however, remained organised throughout. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou dealt confidently with Canada’s attacks, while Achraf Hakimi and Issa Diop helped keep the North Americans scoreless.

The teams went into the break level at 0-0 despite an entertaining opening 45 minutes.

Ounahi Takes Control

Morocco emerged from halftime with greater intensity.

Just five minutes after the restart, Achraf Hakimi burst forward and found Azzedine Ounahi, who calmly finished to give Morocco a deserved 1-0 lead.

Canada responded by increasing the pressure, introducing fresh attacking players including Cyle Larin, Promise David, and Jonathan Osorio, but Morocco’s defence continued to absorb everything comfortably.

With eight minutes remaining, Morocco struck again.

Brahim Diaz delivered another excellent pass into the box and Ounahi finished clinically for his second goal of the evening, effectively ending Canada’s hopes of a comeback.

Rahimi Finishes the Job

Canada continued searching for a consolation goal but struggled to create clear opportunities against Morocco’s disciplined defensive structure.

Deep into stoppage time, Morocco launched one final attack. Brahim Diaz once again turned provider, setting up Soufiane Rahimi, who finished confidently to make it 3-0 and complete an outstanding Moroccan performance.

Match Statistics

Morocco may have registered only five shots during the match, but they were remarkably efficient.

  • Possession: Canada 44% – 56% Morocco
  • Shots: Canada 10 – 5 Morocco
  • Shots on target: Canada 3 – 4 Morocco
  • Passes: Canada 347 – 399 Morocco
  • Pass accuracy: Canada 78% – 85% Morocco
  • Corners: Canada 11 – 1 Morocco

While Canada produced more attempts and dominated the corner count, Morocco were far more clinical whenever opportunities presented themselves.

Turning Point

The opening goal from Ounahi immediately after halftime changed the complexion of the match.

Canada were forced to commit more players forward, creating additional space that Morocco exploited brilliantly through quick transitions. Ounahi’s second goal and Rahimi’s late strike reflected Morocco’s composure and tactical discipline.

What It Means

Morocco advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, continuing another memorable World Cup campaign and reinforcing their status as one of the tournament’s most dangerous teams.

Canada bow out after reaching the Round of 16, a campaign that demonstrated significant progress on the world stage despite ending in defeat.

Canada vs Morocco Preview: Atlas Lions Eye Quarter-Final Place Against Canada’s Golden Generation

The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage continues with an intriguing Round of 16 clash as Canada take on Morocco at Houston Stadium.

Morocco enter the match as slight favourites after another impressive tournament campaign, while Canada have already proven they can compete with anyone after edging South Africa in dramatic fashion to reach the knockout rounds.

With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, expect an intense battle between two athletic, disciplined sides.

Road to the Round of 16

Canada

Canada booked their place in the knockout stages with a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa.

Stephen Eustáquio’s stoppage-time winner kept Jesse Marsch’s side alive and showcased the resilience that has become one of Canada’s trademarks. While they have not always dominated possession, they have remained organized defensively and dangerous in transition.

Morocco

Morocco arrive full of confidence after eliminating the Netherlands in one of the biggest upsets of the Round of 32.

After drawing 1-1 through 120 minutes, the Atlas Lions held their nerve to win the penalty shootout 3-2. Their disciplined defending, midfield control and composure under pressure continue to make them one of the tournament’s toughest opponents.

Players to Watch

Canada

Jonathan David
Canada’s leading attacking threat. His movement and finishing will be crucial against Morocco’s disciplined defence.

Stephen Eustáquio
Fresh from scoring the winner against South Africa, the midfielder controls Canada’s tempo and provides quality from set pieces.

Alphonso Davies
Whether deployed in defence or attack, Davies has the pace to change games in an instant.

Morocco

One of the world’s best attacking full-backs, Hakimi provides width, creativity and leadership.

Brahim Díaz
Capable of unlocking compact defences with his dribbling and vision.

Soufiane Rahimi
A constant goal threat who has repeatedly delivered in knockout football.

Tactical Preview

Canada are expected to remain compact before looking to exploit space on the counter through David and Davies.

Morocco will likely enjoy more possession while patiently searching for openings using Hakimi’s overlapping runs and their technically gifted midfield.

Set pieces could prove decisive between two well-organized defensive units.

Win Probability

  • Morocco: 51%
  • Extra Time: 28%
  • Canada: 21%

The numbers suggest Morocco are favourites, but Canada’s ability to remain competitive deep into matches means this contest could easily require extra time.

Prediction

Morocco have consistently shown they can control knockout matches without needing to dominate the scoreboard.

Canada possess enough quality to make life difficult, but Morocco’s experience and defensive discipline may ultimately prove the difference.

Prediction: Canada 1-2 Morocco

What the Winner Gets

The winner will advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, where an even tougher challenge awaits as the tournament’s remaining contenders battle for a place in the last four.
