Kylian Mbappé’s second-half penalty proved the difference as France edged a resilient Paraguay 1-0 in Philadelphia to secure their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals.

Despite dominating possession and creating the overwhelming majority of chances, France had to remain patient against a disciplined Paraguayan defence. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 70th minute after a VAR review awarded Didier Deschamps’ side a penalty, which Mbappé calmly converted.

Paraguay Frustrate France Early

France controlled the opening stages, enjoying 76% possession throughout the match and repeatedly pinning Paraguay deep inside their own half.

Les Bleus earned several early corners and tested Paraguay’s defensive organisation, but clear-cut opportunities remained limited. Paraguay, under Gustavo Alfaro, defended compactly and looked to threaten on the counter through Miguel Almirón and Julio Enciso.

The South Americans managed just five shots all game but kept France scoreless through the opening 45 minutes, sending the teams into halftime locked at 0-0.

VAR Provides the Breakthrough

France resumed the second half with even greater attacking intent.

Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola and Mbappé continued stretching Paraguay’s defence, while Didier Deschamps introduced Désiré Doué to add fresh energy in attack.

The decisive moment came in the 68th minute.

Following a VAR review, France were awarded a penalty after a foul inside the area. Mbappé stepped up and confidently fired his spot-kick beyond goalkeeper Orlando Gill to give France a deserved 1-0 advantage.

Paraguay Push Late

Paraguay responded with attacking substitutions, bringing on Gabriel Ávalos and Mauricio in search of an equaliser.

France, however, remained composed.

Although Paraguay forced a late corner and pushed numbers forward during stoppage time, they rarely troubled the French defence. Mbappé nearly doubled the lead in the closing minutes, while Michael Olise and Manu Koné helped France manage the final stages despite both collecting yellow cards.

After more than ten minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed France’s passage into the last eight.

Match Statistics

France completely controlled the contest despite winning by just a single goal.

  • Possession: Paraguay 24% – 76% France
  • Shots: Paraguay 5 – 15 France
  • Shots on target: Paraguay 1 – 5 France
  • Passes: Paraguay 175 – 553 France
  • Pass accuracy: Paraguay 57% – 90% France
  • Corners: Paraguay 2 – 12 France

The numbers reflected France’s dominance, but Paraguay’s disciplined defending ensured the match remained competitive until the final whistle.

Turning Point

The VAR intervention in the 68th minute proved decisive.

After sustained French pressure throughout the match, Mbappé converted from the penalty spot to finally break Paraguay’s resistance. From there, France expertly controlled possession and denied Paraguay any meaningful route back into the contest.

What It Means

France advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, where tougher tests await as they continue their pursuit of another world title.

Paraguay exit the tournament with plenty of credit after producing one of the tournament favourites’ sternest defensive examinations.

Paraguay vs France Preview: Giant-Killers Meet Tournament Favourites in Round of 16 Clash

France continue their quest for a third FIFA World Cup title when they face surprise package Paraguay in the Round of 16 at Philadelphia Stadium.

Les Bleus arrive in outstanding form after a dominant victory over Sweden, while Paraguay stunned Germany in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, winning on penalties after an unforgettable knockout battle.

Now, Paraguay will look to produce another shock against one of the world’s strongest squads.

Road to the Round of 16

Paraguay

Paraguay produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises by eliminating Germany.

After drawing 1-1 through 120 minutes, Gustavo Alfaro’s side kept their composure during the penalty shootout to secure a famous 4-3 victory. Their defensive discipline, resilience and ability to frustrate stronger opponents have become their biggest strengths.

France

France looked every bit like title contenders in their convincing 3-0 victory over Sweden.

Kylian Mbappé scored twice while Bradley Barcola added another as Didier Deschamps’ side dominated possession, created numerous chances and barely allowed Sweden an opportunity in front of goal.

Confidence within the French camp could hardly be higher.

Players to Watch

Paraguay

Julio Enciso
Paraguay’s most creative attacker remains capable of producing moments of brilliance against any defence.

Gustavo Gómez
The experienced captain will have the enormous task of organizing Paraguay’s defence against France’s star-studded attack.

Orlando Gill
The goalkeeper could once again become Paraguay’s hero if the match turns into another defensive battle.

France

Kylian Mbappé
Already among the tournament’s leading scorers, Mbappé remains France’s biggest attacking weapon.

Bradley Barcola
His pace and direct running have added another dimension to France’s attack.

Michael Olise
Creative, intelligent and dangerous between the lines, Olise continues to supply quality chances for his teammates.

Tactical Preview

Paraguay are expected to defend in numbers, stay compact and look to exploit counter-attacking opportunities through Enciso.

France will dominate possession, press aggressively and attempt to stretch Paraguay’s defensive block with the movement of Mbappé, Barcola and Olise.

The longer Paraguay can keep the match level, the greater their chances of creating another upset.

Win Probability

  • France: 81%
  • Extra Time: 13%
  • Paraguay: 6%

France enter as overwhelming favourites, but Paraguay have already shown that predictions count for little in knockout football.

Prediction

France possess superior quality across every area of the pitch and arrive in excellent form.

Paraguay’s organisation should make life difficult, but over 90 minutes Les Bleus are expected to have enough attacking quality to progress.

Prediction: Paraguay 0-2 France

What the Winner Gets

The winner will advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, moving one step closer to lifting football’s biggest prize.
