The Netherlands delivered one of the most dominant performances of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage, crushing Sweden 5-1 in Houston to move top of Group F.

Despite Sweden producing more shots and testing the Dutch goal repeatedly, Ronald Koeman’s side were ruthless in front of goal. Brian Brobbey struck twice in the first half before Cody Gakpo added a second-half brace. Substitute Crysencio Summerville completed the rout late on as the Dutch took a major step toward the knockout rounds.

Brobbey Sets the Tone

The Dutch wasted little time asserting themselves.

Brian Brobbey opened the scoring in the fifth minute, giving the Netherlands an early advantage and immediately putting Sweden on the back foot.

The striker doubled the lead in the 17th minute after being set up by Denzel Dumfries, finishing calmly to make it 2-0.

Sweden enjoyed periods of possession and created chances of their own, but their inability to convert opportunities proved costly.

A potential Swedish goal was later ruled out following a VAR review, allowing the Netherlands to head into halftime with their two-goal cushion intact.

Gakpo Takes Over After the Break

Any hopes of a Swedish comeback disappeared shortly after the restart.

Cody Gakpo struck in the 47th minute, finishing from close range after excellent work from Dumfries to make it 3-0.

Just seven minutes later, Gakpo grabbed his second of the evening, extending the lead to 4-0 and effectively ending the contest.

The Liverpool forward produced a clinical display, punishing Sweden whenever opportunities appeared.

Sweden Find a Response

To their credit, Sweden continued to attack.

Anthony Elanga came off the bench and pulled one back in the 59th minute after being set up by Alexander Isak.

The goal rewarded Sweden’s attacking efforts after creating 21 shots throughout the match.

However, the Dutch defense remained largely comfortable despite the pressure.

Summerville Adds the Finishing Touch

The final word belonged to another substitute.

Memphis Depay, introduced late in the second half, created the fifth goal for Crysencio Summerville in the 89th minute.

The finish capped a devastating attacking performance and underlined the efficiency of the Dutch attack.

Match Statistics

The final scoreline did not entirely reflect the balance of chances.

  • Shots: Netherlands 12 – 21 Sweden
  • Shots on Target: Netherlands 7 – 10 Sweden
  • Possession: Netherlands 52% – 48% Sweden
  • Passes: Netherlands 352 – 386 Sweden
  • Pass Accuracy: Netherlands 88% – 84% Sweden
  • Corners: Netherlands 2 – 5 Sweden

While Sweden created more opportunities, the Netherlands converted five goals from seven shots on target in a ruthless display of finishing.

The Netherlands and Japan now occupy the qualification places heading into the final round of group-stage matches.

Player of the Match

Cody Gakpo (Netherlands)

Gakpo’s two goals after halftime crushed any hopes of a Swedish comeback. His movement, finishing and composure in front of goal made the difference in a match where chances were at a premium for the Dutch.

What It Means

The Netherlands now sit top of Group F and are well positioned to reach the Round of 32.

For Sweden, the defeat was painful not only because of the scoreline but because they created enough chances to make the match far more competitive. Their final group match now becomes a must-win encounter if they are to progress.

The Dutch, meanwhile, sent a clear message to the rest of the tournament: they remain one of the most dangerous attacking teams at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Netherlands and Sweden clash in a pivotal Group F battle with qualification momentum on the line.

The Netherlands and Sweden face off in one of the standout fixtures of FIFA World Cup 2026 Matchday 2 as both sides look to strengthen their position in Group F.

The match will be played at 20:00 EAT, with Sweden entering as group leaders after an emphatic opening victory, while the Netherlands seek their first win after drawing their opening fixture.

With knockout qualification beginning to take shape, the result could have a major impact on the race for the top two places.

Netherlands chasing first victory

The Dutch opened their World Cup campaign with a draw that left them third in Group F on one point.

Despite showing their attacking quality, they were unable to secure maximum points and now face a significant test against an in-form Swedish side.

A victory would move the Netherlands to four points and put them in an excellent position heading into the final group match.

Sweden aiming to continue perfect start

Sweden made a statement in their opening fixture, scoring five goals to move to the top of Group F with three points and a healthy goal difference.

Another victory would virtually guarantee progression to the knockout stage and cement their status as one of the early surprises of the tournament.

Their attacking confidence and clinical finishing will provide a stern challenge for the Dutch defense.

Group F standings

After Matchday 1:

  1. Sweden – 3 points (+4)
  2. Japan – 1 point (0)
  3. Netherlands – 1 point (0)
  4. Tunisia – 0 points (-4)

The Netherlands know a defeat could leave qualification hanging by a thread, while Sweden have the opportunity to secure control of the group.

Match outlook

The pre-match projections slightly favor the Netherlands despite Sweden’s impressive start.

Win probability:

  • Netherlands: 55%
  • Draw: 24%
  • Sweden: 21%

The Dutch are expected to dominate possession and create chances through their attacking play, while Sweden will look to exploit transitions and continue the form that saw them score five goals in their opener.

With two talented European sides battling for control of Group F, fans can expect a competitive encounter with significant knockout-stage implications.
