Belgium Refuse to Die in Seattle

For more than 85 minutes, Belgium looked destined to become the biggest casualty of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.

Senegal were disciplined, clinical and deservedly led by two goals after strikes from Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr had stunned the Red Devils in Seattle. Belgium looked short of ideas, Kevin De Bruyne had already been substituted, and the African side were within touching distance of one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.

Then everything changed.

Romelu Lukaku sparked belief with four minutes remaining, Youri Tielemans completed an astonishing comeback three minutes later, and after surviving extra time, the midfielder kept his composure to convert a 120th-minute penalty that completed one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the tournament.

Belgium are through.

Senegal are out.

Senegal Controlled the Contest

Senegal carried the sharper attacking threat from the opening whistle.

Habib Diarra broke the deadlock in the 24th minute after Belgium struggled to deal with sustained pressure, before Ismaïla Sarr doubled the advantage shortly after halftime to put the African side firmly in control.

Despite Belgium enjoying slightly more possession (53%) and attempting 21 shots, Senegal remained compact, dangerous on the counterattack and looked comfortable protecting their lead.

With just minutes remaining, qualification seemed all but secured.

Lukaku Ignites the Comeback

Belgium’s turning point arrived the moment Romelu Lukaku stepped onto the pitch at halftime.

His physical presence immediately gave Belgium a focal point in attack and eventually paid dividends.

The striker powered home in the 86th minute to halve the deficit before Belgium threw everything forward.

Just three minutes later, Leandro Trossard delivered a perfect cross that Youri Tielemans converted to make it 2-2, completing a remarkable late comeback that silenced the Senegal supporters.

A match that appeared over was suddenly heading into extra time.

Extra Time Ends in Heartbreak for Senegal

Both teams created opportunities during the additional thirty minutes, but fatigue gradually took hold.

With penalties looming, VAR intervened deep into stoppage time after Belgium were awarded a decisive spot kick.

Youri Tielemans stepped forward in the 120th minute.

He made no mistake.

The midfielder calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to score his second goal of the night and complete Belgium’s incredible escape.

There was barely enough time for Senegal to respond before the final whistle confirmed one of the most dramatic knockout victories of the tournament.

Match Statistics

Belgium finished with 21 shots to Senegal’s 19 while recording 53% possession and completing 629 passes at an 89% accuracy rate. Senegal remained competitive throughout, matching Belgium with five shots on target and threatening on numerous counterattacks, but the late collapse ultimately proved costly.

What the Result Means

Belgium survive one of the toughest tests of the Round of 32 and advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after producing a comeback that will be remembered as one of the defining matches of the tournament.

For Senegal, the defeat is a cruel ending. After leading by two goals with only minutes remaining, they leave the competition wondering how a historic victory slipped away at the very end.
