France Make Their Title Intentions Clear
France delivered one of the most convincing performances of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32, defeating Sweden 3-0 at New York New Jersey Stadium to book their place in the Round of 16.
A brace from captain Kylian Mbappé and a goal from Bradley Barcola capped a dominant evening in which Didier Deschamps’ side controlled possession, created chance after chance and rarely allowed Sweden a route back into the contest.
Mbappé Leads From the Front
France’s pressure paid off just before halftime when Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 45th minute, giving Les Bleus the breakthrough their first-half dominance deserved.
The momentum carried into the second half.
Bradley Barcola doubled the advantage in the 53rd minute after another flowing French attack before Mbappé completed his brace in the 74th minute, finishing off an assist from Michael Olise to put the result beyond doubt.
With the job done, Deschamps rotated his squad during the closing stages, giving valuable minutes to fresh legs ahead of the next round.
Sweden Overwhelmed Throughout
Sweden struggled to cope with France’s relentless attacking rhythm.
Although Graham Potter’s side remained disciplined defensively for long spells, they managed just eight shots and only three on target while spending much of the evening without the ball.
France dominated possession with 61%, completed over 520 passes and consistently forced Sweden deep inside their own half.
Substitutions including Taha Ali, Besfort Zeneli, Benjamin Nygren and Mattias Svanberg failed to change the flow of the match as Les Bleus comfortably controlled proceedings until the final whistle.
Match Statistics
France finished with 25 shots, including 13 on target, compared to Sweden’s eight attempts and three on target. Les Bleus controlled 61% possession, completed 523 passes at 91% accuracy and won nine corners, highlighting their sustained attacking pressure throughout the contest.
What the Result Means
France advance confidently into the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after producing one of the tournament’s most dominant knockout performances so far.
For Sweden, the defeat ends their World Cup campaign after being outplayed by one of the favourites, whose combination of pace, quality and efficiency once again underlined why Les Bleus remain among the strongest contenders for the title.
