Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals in dramatic fashion after substitute Mikel Merino struck deep into stoppage time to seal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portugal.

With extra time looming in a tense Iberian derby, Merino came off the bench to deliver the decisive moment in the 90th minute, breaking Portuguese hearts and sending Luis de la Fuente’s side into the last eight.

Tight First Half Between Iberian Rivals

The opening 45 minutes produced few clear-cut chances as both teams cancelled each other out.

Spain enjoyed more possession and patiently built attacks through Pedri and Lamine Yamal, while Portugal looked to Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and João Félix on the counter.

Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested as the sides went into halftime level at 0-0.

Spain Increase the Pressure

Spain returned after the break with greater urgency.

Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Alex Baena all came close as Portugal’s defence came under increasing pressure.

Portugal responded by introducing Rafael Leão, Bernardo Silva and Francisco Conceição, hoping to find a breakthrough of their own.

Instead, Spain continued to dominate territory and chances.

Merino Delivers the Decisive Blow

Luis de la Fuente introduced Mikel Merino in the 85th minute, and the substitution proved inspired.

Deep into stoppage time, Ferran Torres delivered a dangerous ball into the area, where Merino arrived perfectly to fire Spain into a 1-0 lead.

Portugal threw everyone forward in the closing moments, but Spain held firm to secure one of the tournament’s most dramatic knockout victories.

Match Statistics

Spain controlled much of the contest.

  • Possession: Portugal 44% – 56% Spain
  • Shots: Portugal 10 – 15 Spain
  • Shots on target: Portugal 3 – 6 Spain
  • Passes: Portugal 434 – 522 Spain
  • Pass accuracy: Portugal 85% – 91% Spain
  • Corners: Portugal 3 – 7 Spain

Spain created more chances throughout the match and were rewarded with a late winner after sustained second-half pressure.

Key Talking Points

  • Mikel Merino scored the winning goal just minutes after coming off the bench.
  • Ferran Torres made an immediate impact by providing the decisive assist.
  • Spain’s midfield controlled possession for long spells despite Portugal’s experienced lineup.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal were unable to find a breakthrough in a tightly contested encounter.

What It Means

Spain advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, where they will continue their pursuit of a second consecutive major international title.

Portugal are eliminated after a disciplined defensive performance that was ultimately undone by one late lapse in concentration.

Portugal vs Spain Preview: Iberian Rivals Meet in Blockbuster World Cup Round of 16 Clash

One of the biggest matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 sees Iberian rivals Portugal and Spain battle for a place in the quarter-finals at Dallas Stadium.

Portugal arrive after a dramatic comeback victory over Croatia, while Spain have looked one of the tournament’s most complete teams following an emphatic win over Austria.

With elite talent on both sides and decades of rivalry behind them, this promises to be one of the standout matches of the knockout stage.

Road to the Round of 16

Portugal

Portugal showed remarkable character to defeat Croatia 2-1 in the Round of 32.

Ivan Perišić gave Croatia the lead early in the second half before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot. Deep into stoppage time, substitute Gonçalo Ramos headed home the winner to complete a dramatic comeback and send Roberto Martínez’s side into the last 16.

Spain

Spain underlined their status as title contenders with a dominant 3-0 victory over Austria.

Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice while Pedro Porro added another as La Roja controlled possession, created chance after chance and restricted Austria to no shots on target.

Luis de la Fuente’s side arrive full of confidence after one of the most convincing performances of the Round of 32.

Players to Watch

Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo
Still delivering on the biggest stage, Ronaldo’s leadership and finishing remain Portugal’s greatest weapons.

Rafael Leão
His pace and creativity can stretch any defence and create opportunities in transition.

Gonçalo Ramos
Fresh from scoring the winning goal against Croatia, Ramos could again make the difference.

Spain

Lamine Yamal
One of the tournament’s brightest young stars, capable of changing matches with his dribbling and vision.

Mikel Oyarzabal
Scored twice against Austria and enters the knockout tie in excellent form.

Pedri
Spain’s midfield conductor, dictating tempo and controlling possession.

Tactical Preview

Portugal are likely to stay compact before looking to exploit Spain through quick transitions led by Leão and Ronaldo.

Spain will aim to dominate possession, press aggressively and patiently move Portugal out of shape through their trademark passing game.

The midfield battle could ultimately determine who progresses.

Win Probability

  • Spain: 50%
  • Extra Time: 26%
  • Portugal: 24%

Spain are slight favourites, but the probability suggests one of the closest and most evenly balanced ties of the Round of 16.

Prediction

Both teams possess enough quality to win the match, and moments of individual brilliance could decide the outcome.

Spain’s consistency and control in midfield give them a slight edge, but Portugal’s experience means they cannot be underestimated.

Prediction: Portugal 1-2 Spain

What the Winner Gets

The winner will move into the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, keeping alive hopes of lifting football’s most prestigious trophy.
